Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
I have recently been told of a blog someone has posted using my unique, god-given name, posting a lengthy libelous and slander-ridden biography of my so-called life. I have had nothing but financial and economic ruin over the last few years, which made me flee my life and area of residence, and relocate. I just found out tonight that this coincides with the problems in my financial and social life problems over the last several years, which I now believe, still haunts me today. I am wondering that given that I have such a unique given name which I am identified with, that anyone logging onto the internet would find the aggregious mischaracterizations as a basis in which I could sue the founder for damages to my reputation, livelihood, and basic rights. I need advice, as I am absolutely beside myself. It makes me think that less emotionally stable people in the same situation would not turn to violence if they could find the person(s) responsible. Of course, that is never the answer. Someone please get back to me.

Dear Mr. Smith:
I am sorry you feel your life is in the dumper and I am additionally sorry that someone has posted a "libelous" biography of someone having a similar name to yourself. You could sue them. But what are your damages? Can you really prove that you would have had income, jobs, economic success, but for this blog? Watch out for legal time limits. Also, I respectfully recommend that you not post to the internet about how violent you would be if you were less emotionally stable.
