recorded conversations

at what point am i breaking the law in california when i walk around recording everything my ears hear?

for example: i hear the birds in the park and that is recorded- i walk into a cafe and hear the people talking and that is recorded- i walk into my job and hear coworkers telling jokes and that is recorded- everything i hear at all times is recorded.. am i breaking the law?

You would be breaking the law when you recorded conversations which at least one participant reasonably expected to be private, unless you had the permission of all participants. You would also be breaking the law when you recorded concerts, plays, radio broadcasts, sound or video recordings (in any format) or other forms of intellectual property without permission. If you record trade secret information at your job, that would also be a violation.

There are probably many other ways you would or could run afoul of the law; these are just the ones that come to mind at the moment.
