Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
Relationship in CA gone bad-what are my rights on living arrangements
I have known this man for 2 years and after dating, he asked me to move in with him at his house. I didn't feel like it was my home, so he purchased a separate home for him, my 18 year old son, and I to move into 9 months ago. We also took in a 9 year old of a friend and I was in the process of seeking legal guardianship. He also owns a 7-eleven and was paying me to be the store manager. I caught him in bed with a (so-called friend), and the relationship began deteriorating. He fired me from my job, and he moved out of our home. He left me with no money or source of income, and no transpo for about 2 wks, but he did buy me a $700 car to use. He would come back and then leave and he did this several times. 10 days ago, he told me that we had 10 days to move from the house my son, the 9 year old boy and I are still living in. He paid all of the household bills the entire time we were there, and now he says he cannot do it anymore and that we need to be out and that he was turning off the utilities on the 15th. There is no way I can be out by tom. Ijust got another job and it will be 2 wks. til payday. I have no money. He won't let us keep on util. or change them over. Do I have any rights? How long can we stay?

Since you were not required to pay rent, he must give you a 30-day written notice and, if you don't move by then, he can go to court to force the eviction. That doesn't mean he'll follow the law. Also, a landlord cannot turn off the utilities to force a tenant out. You might talk with the utilities about paying to keep them on until you leave. Good luck.

Try re-posting your question under landlord & tenant law. Most litigators don't specialize in this area, but the attorneys who answer questions in the landlord & tenant category all do.
Good luck.
