Depending on what kind of appearance, you can either write a letter requesting one or you may have to make a formal motion. Be sure you do whatever early enough before the hearing. Judges don�t like requests for postponement the day or day before the appearance. There are certain requirements as to how long but without knowing more I cannot be more specific.
