Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

My responsibility for items knocked into my backyard

My wife and I were away yesterday when our neighbors knocked a ball into our backyard. We came home and found our dog with the ball, and of course, it was chewed up a bit. The neighbors now want us to pay for a new ball. Is it my responsibility to pay for a new ball?

From a legal stand point, I do not see how you could have any liability for replacing the ball. From a practical standpoint, you have to ask yourself is it worth damaging any relationship you might have with these neighbors over a $5 ball. Consider how long you will be living next door to these people before you answer that question.
