Can I retrieve my personal property via small claims?

I was living with my girlfriend up until friday morning. I left many clothes items,shoes and a digital camera at her home. Since we are no longer together, I want my things back, but do not want a physical, nor violent confrontation. I called the police to see what my recourse is, and they will give me an escort to get them out of her home. However, if she says they aren't there, or she has sold them, what is my recourse?
