Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
Robbed by roommate; can I recover moving expenses?
I live with a roommate and his 14 year old son in a 3 bdrm apartment. My car was broken into and the stereo stolen. After being shown evidence, the son finally confessed to taking it with some friends. Apparently, he got into the car with copies of keys he made from keys he took from my room. The roommate will reimburse me for the items stolen, but I don't feel safe in my own apartment and he lease explicitly prohibits installing locks on interior doors so I feel I need to move immediately. This means additional expenses, including an movers, storage, a temporary place to stay with access to a phone until I find a permanent place, and a month's rent because I can't give 30 days notice. Can I recover these expenses from the dad, and if so, what's the best way to go about it?

Probably not. But, if the expenses are significant to you, it is probably worth a trip to small claims court and give it try.
