Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Was served papers when I first moved from NY to California. All my debt was accrued in NY, not California. I answered the complaint against me and waited for the court date set August 16, 2016. Showed up at the court house on that date and was told that the case was settled in 2015 and I had lost. On July 27. 2017, I received a paper in the mail asking for a court date to be set within 60 days. That is from July 24, 2017. I am truly at a loss as to what this is all about. I have been constantly called by all the ones I owe money to, but none have actually sued me but this one. I was homeless and struggled a lot after that to get my feet back on the ground. I have been without a place of my own since 2013 and right now only work part time at minimum wage. I do not no where to turn for some answers about what I should do or what I need to do at this time. Any answers would be gratefully appreciated. Thank You Donna Eldridge

The preliminary question is: Did you notify the court and plaintiff in writing of your CA address when you moved? You might be able to file a motion to set aside the judgment if you do it ASAP. It depends on what NY law allows. Depending on the amount of the judgment and other debts and finances, you might consider filing for bankruptcy protection, even in CA, or even take your chances that they can't get money out of you because of your income status. It might be worth getting a consultation with an attorney in your area to weigh your options. See if the county bar association has a lawyer referral service and sign up for a half-hour consultation at a reduced rate.
