Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Serving someone

It is my understanding that you need to serve someone in person. My ex-boyfriend owes me $9000 but he moved recently and he refuses to tell me where he is currently living. All I know is his home phone number. Is there anyway I can get a court order to make him tell me where he is living or to make him meet me somewhere so I can serve him?

Re: Serving someone

No, but you have other options. You can hire an investigator to find him. If that doesn't work, the court may allow you to serve him via publication in a newspaper. To win such permission you will have to demonstrate that you made a reasonable effort to find the defendant but were unsuccessful.

Of course, if you win a judgment against someone you can't find you may have a hard time collecting.
