Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

If I settle a civil harrassment suit filed against my 17 year old son does this mean he is guilty and does it prevent him from going to college. I cannot afford to keep paying for an attorney.

He was accused along with the school district for sexual harrassment of another boy for horseplaying in the shower at school two years ago. The whole basketball team was horseplaying but he singled out my son because he and the "victim" hit each other later that day due to the horseplay.

The "victims" father is an attorney and wants to drag the case on. I've already payed an attorney about $8000 and cannot afford to pay anymore. I don't own a home and neither does my son's father. We are not married and we each make about $55,000 a year. Thank you for your time!

People are found guilty only in criminal cases, not civil ones. A civil settlement or judgment is not equivalent to a criminal conviction, even if the alleged conduct could also have been charged as a crime.

The settlement probably won't affect your son's college prospects (unless it includes an admission of misconduct), but the school's disciplinary findings might.

Good luck.
