Small Claims Court

My roomate moved out and broke lease in 1996. I thought I had paid the balance in full. When I checked my credit report in 2001. I found that the balance had been turned over to collections. can I take her to small claims for the balance that was turned over to collections in 1997? Both names were on the lease.
