Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

i stayed at a hotel where personal property/ jewelry was stolen. i did not repot it untill i got back home from my trip. i was so sick along with my husband , with aflu bug. that it was about 4 weeks before we could stablize our selves. the hotel says there is nothing they can do. do i have any rights can i do any thing. to get a life time worth o personal property?
