I don't want to sound crude but what happens next is that if you do not hire a lawyer, you are going to be in a very bad situation. I defend civil suits for my clients on a daily basis. Check out my website at www.best.law.pro

Depending on the nature and value of the case, the other side might want to take your and any witnesses' depositions. They might send you written demands for documents and interrogatories (questions to answer in writing under oath), requests for admissions, etc. You should respond to those within the necessary time period, or your answer could be stricken and the plaintiff could get a judgment against you. At the same time, you can do written discovery and depositions as well. You might want to consult with an attorney, or even retain one, if you feel that you can't handle it and it's worth the cost.

Re: What happens next -time line

What you do is hire an attorney immediately, whether it is Mr. Cohen, myself or another attorney. Trying to defend a lawsuit on your own is very difficult and there are too many traps.

Good luck
