Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Transmission (Vehicle)

Recently I purchased a van from a private party. I never did bussiness directly with the owner of the vehicle. That was performed by a third party (his uncle). The uncle could answer no questions about the vehicle but I decided to purchase it anyway. After getting it home and doing some minor repairs on the vehicle I decided to have the transmission serviced. At this point I was informed that the transmission had to be rebuilt. Repair cost of $1500.00. My question is, do I have any legal recourse or am I stuck with this repair bill. I have owned the vehicle about a month now.
