If a trial date is continued (Civil case - California) is the date for discovery continued as well.

No. The date for discovery is expressly NOT continued unless the parties stipulate to it being continued.

Mr. McCormick is right. The discovery cut off is not continued with a continuance of trial unless the partie stipulate and the court orders it.
