Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Unlawful or Just a Bad Job Reference?

I worked for an employer off and on for several years. The last year I worked in the office with this person, the owner of the business. I found that she wasnt honest. The relationship worsened. Eventually I gave her two weeks notice, trained a replacement and believed that I left on good terms.

She's my neigbor;I avoid her as much as possible. My husband noticed a terrible problem with a dog that is kept on a porch. It lost the use of its hind legs and was left alone in filth and stench most of the time. He emailed the Humane Society and they were off to rescue the dog. The former employer found out that it was my husband that told on her.

Worried of what might be said, I asked a friend to call and check this job reference. In dry terms the friend was told that I was a good employee. The friend asked if I would be acceptable to rehire. She was told that I had caused trouble after Id left and that I would never be rehired. The former boss refused to give any more information concerning the statement. Having taken place after I left the job and in view of the fact that I had nothing to do with calling the Humane Society does she have a legal right to mention the matter in relation to my employment?
