Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

There is a wage garnishment against me due to a collection matter. I cannot afford to have them take 25% of my disposal earnings. Should I try and hire an attorney or submit the documentation myself. I have all of the documentation and have itemized all of my expenses.

I've seen many people do it themselves. Some succeed, some fail. You will have to bring all of your bank statements, rent bills and/or rental agreement, utility bills, child support orders, car payments, check registers, etc., with you when you appear in court to ask the judge to reduce the levy. You will have to explain and document why 25% of your net income is a hardship.

I would at least suggest speaking to an attorney, and at the very least, make sure that your paperwork has been properly prepared. It might help you in the long run. I assume that you are claiming a significant amount of expenses and exemptions to reduce the amount of the garnishment.
