Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

My wife and I helped our brother-in-law by trying to talk to my sister-in-law (my wife's sister) through an intervention at her Taoist temple and have her return his paperwork (passport, green card, social) after 3 months on avoidance/non-contact. We finally called the officers to file a report. When they arrived they decided to go enter the premises and fetch her out. After the officers searched the place and did not find her (she supposedly left her car on the street in front even though we had a driveway that's safe from tickets; that's how we figured she'd be there). Anyway, we filed the report and the officers left. Well, when she finally showed up magically from somewhere (we watched the car when the officers mentioned it was okay to do so and call them when someone showed up). She lied to the new set of officers by saying she was returned it 2 months ago, and now they are suing us. We never entered the premises per the officers rules. There were no confrontation by any of us. We waited in our vehicle until the officers showed up.

Do they have a case against us? If so, would this be considered civil or another kind of lawsuit? I'm trying to find out if they can actually sue us for hundred's of thousands as they said they would; I am still awaiting being served the so-called papers.

I do not really understand what happened. If you can clarify what occurred, why they say they will sue you, what the car has to do with it, etc., I can then try to answer.
