Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Have to be a witness?

My father wants me to testify in a case against a bunch of his supposedly crooked business associates and acquaintances, possibly including my mother. I absolutely don't know anything, I can't say anything to help him. I live several states away. How hard is this to get out of? The only thing of any use is that he lent me a key to his office during the brouhaha, which, as a lousy teenager, I lost. He thinks some very conspiratorial things went on with it. All I can say is I lost the key. Can I provide a statement without coming in to testify?

Re: Have to be a witness?

You might call your father's lawyer and discuss your knowledge so that the lawyer could make an informed decision and not spend your father's hard-earned money needlessly. You are not required to travel several states if you're not a party to the lawsuit. They might have to come to you to take your deposition or arrange for a video or telephonic deposition. Good luck to you, and happy new year.
