Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to sue for libel if a false claim against me has gotten me banned from a virtual world, and my virtual property and real life money frozen? A person who had been harassing me for weeks on the MMO "SecondLife" had been harassing me on my SecondLife related blog as I was a competitor to his virtual business. When I had ignored his harassment, he had made remarks about finding "any way to shut me down." Later on, he had sent an email to Linden Lab (the creator of SecondLife) claiming that I was a 15 year old girl, and therefore not allowed inside the virtual world. Linden Lab had contacted me, asking to verify my identity. I had sent them a copy of my birth certificate as well as my drivers license as proof. The staffer who had been handling my case rejected it immediately as false and I was told never to contact Linden Lab again. My hardware and IP address were also banned, a quite unusual practice from that company. The competitor had left me numerous emails bragging about how "the right 50$ in the right paypal can do great things" and "who is going to know it was all a lie." I had nearly 200$ USD inside of my account alone, as well as thousands of dollars worth of virtual property. As a result of this account hold, my main source of income has also been shut down. Is there a way to sue the competitor for libel or damages?

I don't see why not, if you can find out the real name and physical location of the villain. You may wish to have your attorney communicate with Linden Labs. Watch out for legal time limits.
