Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I work in hospitality, a guest comes in with a decline credit card. I asked for a new card and she didn't have one. She left and 10minutes later came back. Upon returning my coworkers and I were having a conversation and jokingly laughing. She took it in offense that she was the topic of our conversation. Not true. Spoke to another clerk about in the morning and to my manager later. Ok not a problem. What bothers me is that she proceeded to call again and talk to another employee spreading false information that she was the topic. If this leads to me loosing my job due to lack of investigation by managers, can I sue her for lost wages and defamation?

yes you could but it would be hard case to prove because your work is the witness and they don't want to be involved.
