Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

adjustment of status

my wife(permanent resident) filed a petition for me on 07/2004, Iam from El Salvador, I am under the TPS program since 2004, I came here illegal on 2003, my wife's petition was approved on 09/2005, on 09/2008 I received a letter from the NVC stating my case was current and they are ready to process my case; they asked if I want to process my visa at the american embassy in El Salvador or at a local CIS office. I never got in trouble and I will like to adjust my status in the U.S.but I don't know if

I'll have problems, I still have the TPS, Iam scare going to E.S. and not coming back, a friend told me I might get in trouble, but I have been legal all this time in the U.S. and I will like to adjust my status to permanent resident here in sacramento,ca.

I will appreciate any advice
