Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

trying to apply for citizenship but was arrested for stealing

My mother was arrested for stealing about 20 years ago when she first came to the Unisted States. There was a misunderstanding in how she thought the merchandise at a department store should be paid. Therefore she was arrested. Due to langugae barrier, having no person to translate for her, she was told to claim guilty. She pleaded guilty in court. Currently she wants to apply for her citizenship, how would this minor crime affect the process? Would we have to go to the police station to get her old records and provide explantion for it?

If it was just a petty theft...I do not see any problem with that. You still need to get the certified copies from the court regarding that case showing what was the disposition of the case.
