Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Is it possible to apply for the work permit as a freelancer

I am currenty in the US on a B1 visa. I want to apply for a change of status. Is it possible to do this on my own, as a freelancer, or do I have to find an employer? (I have a BA, and 3-4 years of freelance experience as a translator). What are my chances of finding an employer that needs a Romanian translator?

For an H-1B or L visa you have to have an employer petition for you. A translator position which normally requires a Bachelor's degree would qualify for H-1B. This sounds like the category you're shooting for. A tricky arrangement could be for you to set yourself up as a consulting firm which does substantial work (translation or otherwise) between Romania and the US and you can petition for an E-1 treaty trader visa. But this isn't easy to set up properly.

The chance of an employer needing a Romanian translator obviously depends upon the type of field or industry that employer is in.
