Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
change name on high school records
A friend needs to change the name on his high school records/diploma. This supposedly requires a court order. How do we start the process to obtain that?
Here is the complication: He came to the country illegally at a young age and a family that took him in gave him another name to use (I don't know if a false SSN or other id info was involved). He currently has a green card, but is worried about the statute of limitations for coming here illegally and using the false name. He doesn't want to get in trouble with the law or get deported.

Re: change name on high school records
Just go to court and do the name change petition. He'll have to explain fully what happened. The civil judge does not have jurisdiction over his using a false name since it was an immigration violation. So, if the matter is truthfully explained with the original birth certificate, it should probably be approved.
There's no statute of limitations when it comes to being deportable. The INS can deport someone who's here illegally at any time. But, the Calif. Superior Court does not share information with the INS since what your friend did was an immigration violation.
