Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
country of birth
I am a Canadian citizen (and have been for the past 30 years) but was born in Seoul, Korea. I applied for permanent residency in the USA and was asked to provide proof that I was born in Korea even though all my identification documents are issued by Canada. As far as I know Korea does not issue birth certificates or at least they didn't 35 years ago. Why is the evidence of my place of birth necessary? And what other ''proof'' can I provide in lieu of a birth certificate?

You can provide your household registry, which has your birth date and the names of your parents.
