expired permanent resident card

I have been a permanent resident since April 1990 my card expired Jan 2006 am i able to work with an expired permanent resident card?

Yes, but you should apply to renew the card. That's because while you remain a permanent resident (unless you've done something to change things), you don't have current proof of that. As a result, its harder to change jobs, travel, etc.

You should renew your green card as soon as possible.

You can also apply US citizenship, if you meet the requirement.
