If your spouse completed his coursework, then he has a 60 day grace period. You can always apply for a change of status to B-2, as long as you are withing the 60 day grace period, with the medical reasons why you need to stay. However, keep in mind, that if USCIS or Dept of State later find that you were out of status for 180 days or more, you will face a bar to re-entry once you leave the U.S.
Your spouse should check with the International Student Office at his school for more information on his status & to see if he is eligible for a grace period.
