Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
is is a good enough reason or it means deportation?
my girlfriend is from romania & has been married to a man from jordan for less than a year. their interview is to come up soon, hopefully. now the husband wants her to change her religion to his (islam) which is a surprise as it never was mentioned before. nobody in his family practices the religion, his brother has been happily married with a christian lady for over 10 years. my girlfriend does not want to do it, but then the husband does not want to have a child, while she really wants to have at least one. they seem to get stuck, both friends/family/professionals are trying to help them but no success whatsoever, actually it is getting worse. what will happen to my girlfriend if they divorce after the interview? will the immigration deport her? she is devastated. i told her that probably there is a way, if the immigration does not put the blame on her for not willing to convert to islam.
what is the exact law in such a case? (my girlfriend is not battered or abused in any way) thank you so much.

Re: is is a good enough reason or it means deportation?
If she's approved at the interview, the green card is a conditional gren card and good only for two years. At the end of the two years, the couple has to file a joint petition to remove the condition. If they're divorced before the two years and she's not a battered spouse, she won't be able to remove the condition on the green card and it will expire. Then she'll be deported.
It might be possible to get a waiver but it's pretty difficult and require strong legal representation.
