Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Hello,

I wanted to know if some one on a B1 visa, who is a dentist in his country plans to volunteer at a US dentist office, assisting him and getting to know the system of dental practice in the US which is something that is favorable when applying to dental educational programs in the US, can accept reimbursement for accommodation during the time he volunteers at this clinic. There is no salary payment, no employment, just offering of partial reimbursement of the cost of accommodation (no more than 30-40$ a day). I have read online contradicting information on this, some say legal and some say illegal. Please advice as I certainty don't want to do something illegal over something trivial like this.

Thank you

A B-1 visa can be used for attending meetings, job interviews, etc., but the B-1 business visitor cannot be engaging in any type of employment, even if it is "unpaid" or "volunteer".

I would not recommend the B-1 visitor being reimbursed by a potential U.S. employer, however, I would not think that the person having his hotel paid for by the inviting party (for example) would be counter to the B-1 visa.
