Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
i-485 pending
I have just filed my 1-485 together with the i-765, and I have a couple of questions.
- how long does it usually take to process such a case (it is religious based)?
- once I get the work permit, can I work for other employers?
- will I be able to move to another state, once i get the work permit, or do i have to wait for the green card?
- where can I find a lawyer to represent me at the interview for the green card?
Thank you.

Answers:

- Adjustment of Status applications are being processed within nine to twelve months from date of receipt.
2) once I get the work permit, can I work for other employers?
- No
3) will I be able to move to another state, once i get the work permit, or do i have to wait for the green card?
- The work permit only grants you permission to work for the sponsor while your application for Adjustment of Status is pending.
4) where can I find a lawyer to represent me at the interview for the green card?
- We can represent you. Call our offices for more information.
Thanks,

The California Service Center is currently processing employment-based I-485 applications that were filed in June 2005, so I would say it its taking about 10 months to process these applications. The California Service Center is currently processing I-765 employment authorization applications that were filed in January 2006 (in conjunction with I-485 applications), so it is taking about 3 months. If the petitioner is an employer, generally speaking the beneficiary should work for the employer for six months after issuance of the green card. Our firm can assist you with a green card interview and any other immigration needs.
