I would like to marry my girlfriend who has been a resident of the united states for 4 months.What I would like to know is how long aproximately would it take for me to get a work permit and a social security? Is it months?

Thank you for your inquiry.

Depending upon her status (I infer from your email that she has a B-2 visitor visa and that you are a US citizen), she can obtain a work authorization card rather quickly after filing the adjustment of status application (green card application). Processing times vary between different USCIS offices. Here in San Diego an applicant may obtain the same the day following the submittal of the application. Social security cards take a bit longer. If proper identification is submitted, it is a much more expeditious process.

Depending on her status, she would need to apply for permanent residence. A few months after she files, she will get work and travel authorization.
