Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

One of my in-laws came to this country illegally in 1995. She has been trying to legitimize her status since that time but has been stonewalled in all these years. Although President Obama pledged to grant an amnesty, it appears he isn't going to keep his pledge.

She has paid a lawyer thousands of dollars to no avail and she is so despondent, that she plans to go back to her native country in November.

I do not want to see her go back as she's a nice person and feel it would be a shame to see her go.

What can be done about this? She has never been in trouble with the law and has paid her share of taxes.

She did have a sponsor - her mother, but she died last year.

What are the responsibilities for a person sponsoring her? Is that person responsible for everything which happens to her? Like medical bills? Debts?

I would really like to see her stay in this country.

Hello:

If her mother sponsored her in the past (as either a Lawful Permanent Resident) or a U.S. Citizen, then she can apply for a Humanitarian Reinstatement of that petition, even though her mother has died.
