Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

naturalization

I was convicted of misdemeanor petty theft in 1999. I served the 15 days work release that was given to me by the judge, and had never been in any trouble since then. I made a bad mistake and I'm really still paying the effects of it. I'm a permanent US resident and I'm afraid that my offense in the past will affect my application for US citizenship next year as I am due for it. Can someone give me some advise as I'am really lost as to what I should do. Thanks

Re: naturalization

Hi,

There might be a way for you to still get the citizenship under the petty theft exception that we have in the law. I will need to review all court paperwork and determine if you qualify, but it is doable.

Petty theft exception is applicable to you. But you should expunge your criminal record as well. When did your probation end?
