Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Passport for Resident Getting Married ASAP

I am getting married on May 15, 2004. I am a US born citizen. My fiancee was born outside of the U.S. but has been here lawfully since August 1999 and holds a green Permanent Resident card and has a SSN.

We want to go out of the country for our honeymoon but she needs a US Passport or re-entry permit to return. We applied for a re-entry permit in Dec. 2003 but was told it will take 450-480 days. She does not have a passport

from her country of origin and cannot obtain one. She does have her original/certified copy of a birth certificate, but it is fully in a foreign language.

How can we leave so that she will be able to re-enter the US when we come back from our honeymoon? Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Unless you are traveling to Mexico or Canada, in which case it is OK to go with the Green card only, you may have a problem at the US border upon re-entry.

If you have already made your travel arrangements (airline, hotel reservations, etc.) I would suggest you go to the INS and speak to an officer with copies of your travel arrangements. Ask them to expedite your case and they might do it. Good luck.
