Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Is a petty theft infraction conviction, under California law, a conviction for immigration purposes???

Some people have told me it is.... and some say it is not, because it involves no jail, no defense attorney, and no trial.

Please clarify me

Dear Inquirer:

Yes, a petty theft conviction is a "conviction" for immigration purposes. The question is whether such a conviction would render one inadmissible or deportable from the US. Generally, a petty theft offense with no other convictions would fall under the "petty offense" exception and not render a person inadmissible to the US.
