Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

have a question regarding travel outside US and re-entry into the US on my retur

I have the temporary I-551 stamp on my passport valid till Nov 2004. However I have not yet received my Green Card. My AOS approval was on Feb 2002 however when I contacted INS they said they messed up and I would have to re-apply for printing my green card. I did so yesterday and filed the application with the Sacramento INS office. My question is regarding travel. Can I travel outside of the US (to India specifically) with the temporary I-551 stamp on my passport and will I be allowed re-entry to the US based on that document when I return?

Thanking you in advance.

Your stamped passport is fine for re-entry as long as the stamp has not been expired.

The I-551 stamp is evidence of your legal permanent residency status and confers all the rights associated with that of an LPR including travel and re-entry into the US.

Thank you for your inquiry. As long as your I-551 stamp is still valid (i.e. it has not as yet expired) you may re-enter the U.S. via the stamp as it is temporary proof of your permanent residency status.
