Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
Returning to the UK
Hello
I have lived as a resident alien (green card holder) for 18 years in California, but am thinking of returning to the UK early next year. I have an 11 year old son born in the US, who is also a british passport holder, but I have never become a US citizen. I think I should apply for citizenship, can I return to the UK during the application process or do I need to stay in California until processed, and also do you have any idea of how long it would take from submitting the application until oath. Because of my return to the UK, should I use an attorney for the entire process?
Thank you very much

Re: Returning to the UK
Short trips abroad should be fine as long as you continue to adhere to the requirements set forth here:

You'll want to have someone check your mail or have an attorney on record who will receive copies of all notices sent to your address. Failure to respond to any of these USCIS notices can result in cancellation of the entire application.
