Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Sponsor for F1 Visa

I am a US citizen.

1. Can I be a sponsor for a person in China who wants to come to US as F1 status? If he/she is not a relative of me.

2. Where can I find out the finanial requirement to become a sponsor for F1? Thank you very much.

Re: Sponsor for F1 Visa

A person cannot petition another person for an F1 visa. An F1 visa is a student visa. A potential student may apply for this visa. The requirements include, among other things: intent to stay in the U.S. temporarily, for the purposes of studying at an established institution; the school has to be an ICE-approved school; and the applicant has to have sufficient financial support, as to not become a public charge. Financial support is shown by availability of funds in an amount that can cover the student's expenses. This amount can depend on different factors.

Re: Sponsor for F1 Visa

You really should consult an Immigration Attorney. This matter is complex and you should not try to do it yourself so you should get an attorney to discuss your options. If you are located in Southern California, you can email me your contact info, so we can discuss your particular situation. There is no charge for consultation

Yes; look to the I-20 - the document the accepting school issues for presentation at the consulate. It shows the amount of money necessary for the studies. You have to show that much, if not a little more.
