Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Possible to Sponsor undocumented employees??

I am the office manager of a small tile company in Southern Ca. We have a number of laborers, and religiously fill out the I-9 for each new employee, but have not been verifying social security numbers due to an in-house communication issue. We are now beginning to do this, but are finding the vast majority of our employees are being flagged by SSA as being invalid. Is there a way for us, as the employer, to get our workers documented so we don't have to end up firing everyone who works for us due to their undocumented status??

No. Generally if they are already here illegally, you cannot make their status legal.

Re: Possible to Sponsor undocumented employees??

It may be possible for some people to legalize their status depending on their country of origin, date of arrival into the United States, and/or if they have any immediate family members in the United States. Possible forms of relief may be political asylum or adjustment of status (if they have immediate relatives here who have already petitioned for them prior to a change in our law a few years ago). Some people may be U.S. Citizens and not even know it if they have had parents and/or grandparents living here who were U.S. Citizens. Each person would have to have their situation individually assessed to be able to answer your question completely.
