Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
I am submitting for my wife the Form I-485 to adjust her status. One question asked therein is whether or notshe has received any public assistance. Her answer to that question is yes because for a 6 month period, prior to marrying, she was receiving food stamps and welfare as her american born daughter is not supported by her father. Of course, after marriage, the welfare was cancelled. My question is rather or not this "yes" answer may adversely effect her application for residency. I myself am an attorney, family law, so i am doing the paperwork myself. Thank you for any help.

Yes is the only answer she can put. Anything else will be perjury. Besides, she can easily explain the circumstances of her receiving aid. While if she were to answer no and get caught, her entire application will be placed in question and possibly cause her to be denied due to lack of good moral character. Good luck.
