Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Hello. I have my temporary green card and in a year I'm supposed to get a permanent one. My lawyer is seeing us now for not paying him the last fee. Our understanding was to pay it after I get the permanent green card. He sent us a letter that he is gonna file the paperwork to dispute this a court, and we will be obligated to pay him the legal fees too. Us this all sounds like right or he just tries to scare us?

This is really a civil law matter, as it is based on a contract. You should read your retainer agreement to see what the language is. However, all immigration attorneys that I know, including myself, charge one flat fee for filing a conditional residence case. It is usually a separate fee to hire an attorney to file for the removal of the condition. I don't see that your attorney is asking for anything unreasonable or unusual. However, again, read the contract.
