You might wish to apply for a U.S. travel document. Normal processing of the application is rather lengthy; however, INS indicates that for humanitarian reasons they will expedite the process. Since you don't have your P.R. card in hand that might be a wiser course of action.

Check the INS site regarding travel permits and the information, application,etc. is there.

That's all you need. But, you could bring copies of your adjustment application and appointment letters just in case.

The temporary stamp in your passport should be sufficient, because it is proof that you have been granted permanent resident status.

If you plan to be abroad for an extended stay, then you should consider applying for a re-entry permit before you leave, which would protect you from being deemed to have abandoned your lawful permanent resident status while you are abroad for a lengthy stay (i.e., 1 year or more), provided you keep your other ties and residence to the U.S. to show you mean to keep your status intact.

You must be in the U.S. when you apply, but may receive the permit abroad.

As lopng as your stamp has not expired and your passport is current you can travel. The stamp is proof of your status. But if either passport or stamp have expired, you have to renew before you travel.
