Re: Unsatisfied with lawyer

You can go to http://www.calbar.ca.gov/state/calbar/calbar_home.jsp and click on the link at the top right of the page titled, "Attorney Search" to see if lawyer is licensed in California. He could be licensed in another state but practice immigration law in California though because immigration law is federal law, the same substantive law all over the U.S.

If you can't locate him at the above site, call and ask him where he IS licensed. You should get a straight answer right away. Then, at worst, you could complain to the bar where licensed. I wouldn't do that necessarily, depending on the substance of the services provided, only because it might not be worth your time, but on the other hand, if inferior service resulted in denial of benefits, then it could be the basis of a motion to allow new counsel to do the right thing. Either way, what he said about being pro bono isn't right, even if you did not pay his whole fee. FYI, in removal proceedings a fee of $4,000 could be a low fee.

If he is not an attorney, contact the City Attorney where you live and complain to the consumer protection people there. You may also contact me directly if in the LA area and I could bring this to the attention of a list serve of several hundred local lawyers to see if anyone knows about this non-attorney charading as one.
