Re: witnesses at the removal hearing
This matter is complex and you should not try to do it yourself so you should get an attorney to discuss your options. If you are located in Southern California, you can email me your contact info, so we can discuss your particular situation. There is no charge for consultation.
Re: witnesses at the removal hearing
Witnesses are cross-examined by the Department of Homeland Security's trial attorney, and yes, that attorney will be adversarial and can be hostile to your witnesses. The judge will ask questions, too, but more to clarify or speed things along. His or her role is not really to cross-examine or challenge your witnesses.
I hope you have an experienced immigration attorney representing you in court, otherwise, it will be almost suicidal. As attorneys, we get accused of saying this to drum up business, but in 12 years of practice and hundreds of cases in court, I've seen maybe one person ever who succeeded on his own case, and that was on a relatively easy I-485 application like yourself. There are too many unpredictable issues and things that can come up in the long year, or two or three years proceedings in court.

Re: witnesses at the removal hearing
The witness will be examined by you, if you want, by the Trial Attorney (District Counsel) for the Immigration Service and might also be questioned by the Immigration Judge.
