Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
I work for an american company on H1B visa. A couple of (american) friends are starting a startup company. If I help them on my free time (without receiving any salary) and receive some shares of their future company as return, would that be against the H1B visa rules?

Yes working in another position other that what you are in the country for while receiving a financial profit (company shares) may violate the visa rules. It depends on the basis or the agreement, type of work performed and amount of time performing it. You should bring all the associated paper work/info, sit down with an immigration attorney and discuss it. Call my office at 562-984-2008 if you want to schedule a consultation.
