Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

financially responsible for college student

I have a 21 year old daughter going to college full time and living around campus. I pay for rent and tuition. Need advice on which way to handle auto insurance. Should I put car in her name and pay for her own insurance to reduce my legal liability? I was told if she was to get into an accident I could be sued personally and I would be better off leaving the car in my name and on my insurance policy? Please advise

Re: financially responsible for college student

You have two options:

A - Get her a car in her name and get her her own insurance. The registered owner and the driver can be legally liable for damages, but you wouldn't be if you are just paying her college tuition and rent.

B - Keep her on your insurance and increase your limits to cover the value of your assets.

Either way would work.
