Legal Question in Insurance Law in California
Group Life Insurance Portability
In 1989 I became a government employee and signed up for basic and AD&D life insurance + 3x pay (each.) At that time I was healthy. I have since become ''uninsurable'' and recently left my job and so I need to continue this policy paying out of my own pocket. Currently, I have been paying total premiums of $196.56 per year and the government has been paying $18.72 per year for these policies. There has been no break in coverage and adjustments have only been made due to age. According to the insurance company I will need to pay $979.20 per year to continue this policy. While I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue the coverage, I do not understand why the company can charge so much more. Why do the original terms of the contract no longer apply?

Conversion policies are usually higher priced, since you are no longer part of the "group." You will need to review the actual policy/contract to determine your rights.
