Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

I am sorry to hear of this situation - first check all her credit cards - home owners insurance, any clubs she belongs to like AAA or AARP - her bank - anything you can think of that offers this type of insurance AMEX, any type of clubs she belongs to - the credit cards ususally have some sort of coverage if the tickets were bought with thier card so check it all - including your countries home insurance as she will need treatment when she returns likely - you will not believe what you can get as a benefit of belonging to certain clubs and credit cards,. If you cant find anything as soon as yiou can get her out of the country safely get her out! This will create a big situation for the hospital and doctors as theyhave to choose to spend a lot of money to sue someone in a foriegn county AND then collect on it or let it go. In my experience they usually let it go depending on the factors - with this amount of money though I do not doubt they may go after her and they can sue her here in US but HAVE TO sue in Federal Court - it is a 50 -50 proposition but the faster she can be moved back to her home country the better and by very tight lipped - everyone she knows or in family. Loook to her Natinal Health insurance for psyment of transfer back home - they will likely pay for that.

I am sorry for the tragedy. Suggest friend to speak with the social worker at the hospital, as I think Medi-Cal affords some care in emergencies like this. And yes, Ms. Wertenberger's suggestion about finding out how her tickets were bought, or what groups she belonged to, may result in some form of insurance coverage. Also have your friend call her country's embassy and see what assistance they can supply. Her native country may have national health insurance which could benefit her here. Good luck.
