Life Insurance Beneficiaries

Is it legal in California for a legally married spouse to name her adult children as sole beneficiaries to her Life Insurance Policy and exclude her husband? Can the husband contest the death benefit distribution to the adult children?

If the policy is their community property the surviving spouse has a right to his or her share of the proceeds. But just naming the children is legal; it is up to the husband to make a claim if and when there are proceeds.
